How to Add an A Record to DNS

Point a hostname to an IPv4 address.

Quick Answer

At the authoritative DNS provider, create an A record with the required host/name and IPv4 address.

Step by Step

  1. Sign in to the authoritative DNS provider.
  2. Open the domain's DNS records.
  3. Choose Add record.
  4. Select type A.
  5. Enter the host/name exactly as required, often @ for the root domain.
  6. Enter the IPv4 address.
  7. Save the record and allow caches to update.

If That Doesn't Work

  • Do not create conflicting records for the same hostname unless the configuration intentionally uses multiple addresses.
  • Confirm the server IP before changing a working site.
