How to Change Where Downloads Are Saved in Windows

Move the Windows Downloads folder or change where your browser saves downloaded files.

Quick Answer

For the Windows Downloads folder, right-click Downloads → Properties → Location. For a browser, change the download location in browser settings.

Step by Step

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Right-click Downloads and choose Properties.
  3. Open the Location tab if available.
  4. Choose Move and select the new folder.
  5. Apply the change.
  6. For browser downloads, open the browser's Settings and look for Downloads or Files and downloads.

If That Doesn't Work

  • Moving the Windows Downloads folder and changing a browser's download setting are separate actions.
  • Avoid moving Downloads into a folder that may later be disconnected, such as an external drive, unless that is intentional.
