How to Copy or Move Files in Windows

Move files to another folder or make a second copy.

Quick Answer

Use Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V to copy. Use Ctrl+X and Ctrl+V to move.

Step by Step

  1. Select the file or files.
  2. Press Ctrl+C to copy or Ctrl+X to move.
  3. Open the destination folder.
  4. Press Ctrl+V.
  5. Wait for the operation to finish before disconnecting external or network storage.

If That Doesn't Work

  • Dragging between folders on the same drive usually moves files, while dragging between drives usually copies them.
  • For important files, verify the destination before deleting the original.
