How to Rename a File or Folder in Windows

Change a filename or folder name without changing its contents.

Quick Answer

Select the file or folder and press F2, or right-click it and choose Rename.

Step by Step

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Select the file or folder.

If That Doesn't Work
