How to Close an App on iPhone or iPad

Remove an app from the app switcher when it is unresponsive.

  1. On a Face ID device, swipe up from the bottom and pause to open the app switcher.
  2. Find the app.
  3. Swipe its preview upward to close it.
  4. Reopen the app.

If That Doesn't Work

  • Normally you do not need to routinely close every app; iOS manages suspended apps.
  • Force-closing is most useful when an app is not responding correctly.
