How to Close an Extra Windows Desktop

Remove a virtual desktop without closing the applications that are open on it.

Quick Answer

Press Windows+Tab, point to the desktop, and choose its Close button; open windows move to another desktop.

Step by Step

  1. Save any open work before making changes that could close programs or restart Windows.
  2. Press Windows+Tab, point to the desktop, and choose its Close button; open windows move to another desktop.
  3. Test the result before making additional changes.
  4. If the problem remains, note any exact error message before restarting or changing more settings.

If That Doesn't Work

  • Windows menus can vary slightly by edition and update level.
  • Avoid registry edits, third-party cleanup utilities, or disabling security features for ordinary troubleshooting unless there is a specific verified reason.
