Open Command Prompt and run tracert followed by a domain or IP address.
Step by Step
- Open Command Prompt.
- Type tracert example.com or another destination.
- Press Enter.
- Review the numbered hops.
- Use the result as a troubleshooting clue rather than proof that a particular hop is broken.
If That Doesn't Work
- Routers can intentionally decline or deprioritize traceroute responses.
- Asterisks at one hop do not necessarily indicate an outage if later hops respond.
