How to Use Tracert in Windows

See the network hops Windows encounters on the way to a destination.

Quick Answer

Open Command Prompt and run tracert followed by a domain or IP address.

Step by Step

  1. Open Command Prompt.
  2. Type tracert example.com or another destination.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Review the numbered hops.
  5. Use the result as a troubleshooting clue rather than proof that a particular hop is broken.

If That Doesn't Work

  • Routers can intentionally decline or deprioritize traceroute responses.
  • Asterisks at one hop do not necessarily indicate an outage if later hops respond.
