What to Do When Wi-Fi Says Connected but There Is No Internet

Work through the common causes when your device joins Wi-Fi but websites will not load.

Quick Answer

Test another device first. If every device is offline, restart the modem/router and check your internet provider.

Step by Step

  1. Try another website or app.
  2. Test another device on the same Wi-Fi.
  3. If all devices are affected, restart the modem/router using the manufacturer's normal restart procedure.
  4. Wait for the connection lights to stabilize.
  5. If only one device is affected, disconnect and reconnect its Wi-Fi.
  6. Restart the affected device.
  7. Check whether the internet provider reports an outage.

If That Doesn't Work

  • Do not factory-reset the router as an early troubleshooting step; that can erase its configuration.
  • A device can be connected to the router even when the router itself has no internet connection.
