How to Check Wi-Fi Signal Strength in Windows

See whether a weak wireless signal may be causing connection problems.

Quick Answer

Check the Wi-Fi icon for a quick indication, or run netsh wlan show interfaces in Command Prompt for a signal percentage on supported Windows systems.

Step by Step

  1. Open Command Prompt.
  2. Type netsh wlan show interfaces and press Enter.
  3. Find the Signal entry for the active Wi-Fi interface.
  4. Move closer to the access point and compare the value if troubleshooting coverage.
  5. Also watch whether the connection switches bands/access points as you move.

If That Doesn't Work

  • Signal strength is only one factor; interference and congestion can hurt performance even with a strong signal.
  • Different devices can report signal strength differently.
