What to Do When Wi-Fi Is Slow on Only One Device

Troubleshoot a phone or computer that is slow while other devices work normally.

Quick Answer

Compare another device in the same location, then restart/reconnect the slow device before changing the router.

Step by Step

  1. Test another device from the same physical location.
  2. Restart the affected device.
  3. Turn Wi-Fi off and back on.
  4. Forget and reconnect to the Wi-Fi network if needed.
  5. Check for large downloads, cloud synchronization, updates, or background activity.
  6. Move closer to the access point and retest.
  7. Update the device and its network drivers/software when appropriate.

If That Doesn't Work

  • If every device is slow, the problem is more likely the internet service, router, interference, or network load.
  • A weak signal in one location can affect devices differently.
