What to Do When Wi-Fi Is Slow on Every Device

Determine whether slow service is coming from Wi-Fi, the router, or the internet connection.

Quick Answer

Test several devices, restart the networking equipment, then compare Wi-Fi performance with a wired connection if possible.

Step by Step

  1. Test more than one device.
  2. Check whether a large download, backup, streaming session, or update is using the connection.
  3. Restart the modem/router normally.
  4. Test near the router.
  5. If possible, connect a computer by Ethernet and compare performance.
  6. Check the provider's service/outage status.
  7. If wired speed is good but Wi-Fi is poor, focus on wireless coverage/interference.

If That Doesn't Work

  • Internet speed and Wi-Fi link speed are different things.
  • Do not factory-reset the router as the first troubleshooting step.
