How to Restart a Modem and Router

Restart home networking equipment without erasing its settings.

Quick Answer

Unplug power from the modem and router, wait about 30 seconds, reconnect the modem first, then reconnect the router after the modem is online.

Step by Step

  1. Identify the modem and router. Some homes use one combined gateway.
  2. Unplug their power cables. Do not press a Reset button.
  3. Wait about 30 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the modem or gateway first.
  5. Wait for its normal internet/online lights to stabilize.
  6. If you have a separate router, reconnect its power and wait for Wi-Fi to return.
  7. Test the connection.

If That Doesn't Work

  • Restart and factory reset are very different. A factory reset can erase Wi-Fi names, passwords, and provider settings.
  • If the internet light never returns, check for a provider outage or contact the provider.
